Big Sister

Photography by Veronika Jobe

A little bit of a change of pace today from that book that I haven’t stopped talking about in weeks.

I would like to show you a new pattern that has just come out from When I Grow Up. This pattern is called Big Sister and its a cardigan that you’d have a hard time keeping in your closet because your sister would “borrow” it (with or without permission). It matches everything and I have been wearing it constantly since it was off the needles! I even wore it to Yarn Rhapsody last week.

As soon as I started knitting this design and realized just how much I loved it, I sent my sister photos and she also loved it, which immediately was brought back to my years growing up with her raiding my closet and mysteriously favorite clothing items would go missing.  We live 7 hours apart now and haven’t lived together in over 10 years and I STILL find things of mine when I go visit her. Good thing I love her so much!

It is also special because it features the next big thing in yarn, which if you haven’t already heard about it, is YOTH yarns and this yarn is called Big Sister.  If you know YOTH, I’m sure you recognize the model (stunning Jasmine) and that the photography is Ve’s herself!  YOTH will soon have kits available that will include a pretty printed pattern and I’ll be sure to update this post with the link once its available. I used the colorway “Mint” for my sweater and it’s an enticing greenish grey neutral.  Thank you so much Veronika for working with me to add your panache to this design!

This pattern begins with a provisional cast-on at the back neck for the collar.  The collar is then worked in one piece for a while, until it is big enough for stitches to be picked up for the back neck. At that point, it’s worked as your typical top-down raglan style seamless cardigan and because the collar is worked at the same time the only finishing you have to do is to weave in your ends!  This is a great design to have on your needles for springtime because once you get going, it really moves along without intense concentration; you can watch your kid’s baseball games and knit at the same time.  Or you can take it on a boat with you if your springtime adventures are less kid-involved than mine and significantly more glamourous.

An aside, this pattern features a new look for When I Grow Up.  I am really digging it, I think its modern and leans toward sophisticated but it still includes some pop and fun which I like to think is pretty much my style!  Thanks to Mary Joy Gumayagay for being so good at interpreting my wants and desires with just a few sentences from me!
